Call Outs/Incidents 2013

2013 had a very high number of callouts with over 3600 man hours involved. This was in large part due to the multi-day search for a missing hilwalker in early April when winter conditions still existed on the Cuillin; sadly he was found deceased in June.

The peak period for callouts is summer. Many of these involve lower leg injuries sustained due to slips or trips, but tragically we had to recover the body of a 25 year old in July who had fallen off the Storr whilst striking camp.

September saw two long callouts. One was for an injured mountaineer on Pinnacle Ridge; this involved many team members and support from our neighbours Kintail MRT. Once the casualty was located (not easy as they were not where they thought they were when they phoned in) and treated, the subsequent stretcher carry alone involved 8 hours through the night. Although the casualty had a serious break to the leg, no permanent damage was done.

Also in September was a two day search for a missing walker; unfortunately they were found deceased on the second day near Coruisk.

The importance of planning, equipment, and not reaching too far beyond your comfort zone was underlined in autumn when a couple set off for Camusunary at 6pm, with inadequate waterproofs, with darkness not far off and in rapidly worsening weather. No map (except for a 'tourist map') or compass was carried. They managed to find a mobile signal and requested help; the team located them and walked them out.
